Marchalina hellenica Gennadius

Marchalica hellenica Gennadius (syn. Monophlebus hellenicus) is a widely spread species in the region of Eastern Mediterranean.

It attacks basically Pinus and especially Pinus brutia Ten. and Pinus halepensis Mill., to smaller extent, Pinus sylverstris L. and Pinus pinea L. It is reported to exist only in Greece and Turkey.

While this scale causes damages to pines on which it lives as a pest by sucking sap, and particularly owing to the “black sooty moulds” that develops in its sweet secretions (honeydew), covering often the whole surface of the tree, it is considered more useful, because of its important role in the beekeeping of Greece and Turkey. Pine honey covers the 60 % of the average honey production in Greece and Turkey, and there are many areas in these countries where the only honey yield comes from Pine- trees.
