Fuat Akal

I received my Ph.D. from the Computer Science Department of ETH Zurich. During my doctoral studies, I was a member of the Database Research Group (DBS) of Prof. Hans-Jörg Schek. Afterward, I joined the Database and Information Systems (DBIS) group of Prof. Heiko Schuldt at the Computer Science Department at the University of Basel (UNIBAS) as a researcher. Then, I worked with the Data Integration team at the Functional Genomics Center Zurich. There, I worked in the development of the bfabric life sciences data management platform as an engineer. I am currently working as an assistant professor at the Computer Engineering Department at Hacettepe University in Ankara.

I am on leave. You can reach me via e-mail though.

Research

I am primarily interested in applied Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare. I am building easy-to-use machine learning-based applications to facilitate physicians' tasks for diagnosing and treating diseases and interpreting images, e.g., microscopic, radiology, etc. I closely work with people from medicine and the life sciences domain for quite a long time. I am open to further collaborations.

I am also working on problems in finance from time to time as fun projects. Recently, I grew interested in NLP, too.

Some keywords that sound interesting to me = { ai, machine learning, deep learning, computer vision, nlp, big data, cloud computing, databases }

I am always looking for graduate students who are interested in building machine learning based applications.

I currently have an open position for a -currently enrolled- graduate student in a TUBITAK supported project. You can approach me if you are interested.

Teaching

I teach several interesting classes every semester. One class I always volunteer to give is the Introduction to Programming course. It allows me to get in touch with freshmen. It also helps me keep my Python abilities sharp. In the data-intensive applications class, I teach students how to use machine learning in problem-solving. I cover big data processing architectures and platforms in the cloud computing and next generation databases classes.

Blog

I started The Good Class recently. I must admit that I did not create much content yet. But, I promise to improve it. I want to share my thoughts, experiences, and knowledge for free with all interested parties. I intend to stay mostly technical. I will focus on data science, machine learning, and Python.
