The country falls int three main geographic regions.The narrow area in the west which includes the Ruzizi River and Lake Tanganyika,is the part of the western branch of the Great Rift valley and includes some lowland. To the East of this region are mountains,which run North-South and reach an altitude of c.8,800ft(2,680).Farther East is a region of broken plateaus with somewhat lower elevation(c.4,500-6,000ft/1,370-1,830m),where most of the population lives.

The inhabitation of Burundi is divided among three ethnic groups: The Hutus,The Tutsis and The Twas.Kirundi and French are both official languages;swahili and english are also spoken.About two thirds of the people are Christian,mostly Roman Catholic;the rest are musliman or traditional beleivers.

Bujumbura is the capital of Burundi.Formally known as Usumbura,it's largest city and it's administrative,communicaiton and econimic center.Manufactures include food products,cement ans other building materials,textiles,soap,shoes, and metal goods.Livestock and agriculture produced from the surarounding region are traded in the city.Bujumbura is Burudian main Port ans ships most of the country's chief export,coffee,as well as cotton,skins,and tinore,via Lake Tanganyika to Tanzania and Congo(Kinshasa).Roads connect the city to to cities in the Congo and Rwanda.The city has an international airport.
