Prof. Dr. Ali Demirsoy
Dr. Ali Demirsoy is presently a Professor of Biological Sciences at Hacettepe University, Ankara-Turkey. He has published numbers of research papers and is the author of some major text books in Turkish. The Foundations of Life, an eight volume work, and Heredity and Evolution are the two most widely known and extensively used text-books of him. His research interest centers around Turkish Fauna (vertebrates, scorpions, leeches, especially insects: Caelifera, Dermaptera, Mantodea, Blattodea and Odonata), protection of environment, Zoogeography.
He was a Humboldt research fellow at Hamburg University twice in 1971-1973 and in 1984. During his fellowship, he has visited various research centers and worked on some of the research projects at research centers in Hambourg, Paris and London; has participated in a UN supported deep-sea research project dealing with oceonografic movements and small fish life.
Dr. Demirsoy was born in 1945 in a village in the Eastern Turkey near Erzincan as the son of a farmer-craftsman. Upon finishing the elementary school in his village in 1956, he obtained a middle school diploma in 1959 and a lycee diploma in 1962. He received his B.S. in Biological Sciences from Ankara University in 1966. He started his academic life as a research assistant at Atatürk University where he received his PhD degree in Biology in 1971. He, then, moved to Hacettepe University as a Professor in 1978, where he has served as the Dean of the Faculty of Science, member of University Senate and as the Chairman of the Department of Zoology. He has been teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels and been the advisor to doctoral canditates.
