Great Gull Islanders were stunned and saddened to hear of the death of Melissa McClure on August 10, 2019. She was killed when struck by a truck while crossing the street near her apartment in New York City. Melissa was a long-time volunteer with the Great Gull Island Project. For many years she drove the van every spring and fall that brought Gull Island gear to and from the Museum for the summer field season. She also spent time on the island where she created and maintained a garden. Melissa also planted a number of fruit trees on the island including a large pear tree. When on the island she also loved to cook and we could all look forward to special dinners when she arrived.
