Budweiser Man of the Match 63, KOR:TUR – Hakan Sukur
by FIFAworldcup.com
Hakan Sukur took his place in history with the fastest FIFA World Cup™ finals goal ever and also won the Budweiser Man of the Match in the third place match against Korea.
After a surprising misstep by Hong Myung Bo, Ilhan Mansiz stole the ball away and fed captain Sukur. He coolly slotted his left-footed shot under goalkeeper Lee Woon Jae. It was an more amazing feat considering that the goal came in just the 11th second, breaking the FIFA World Cup final record held by Vaclav Masek of Czechoslovakia for the past 40 years.
After that tremendous start, Turkey got another two goals in the first 32 minutes, both scored by Mansiz but set up by Sukur.
In the 13th minute, Mansiz passed to Sukur on the edge of the area. He drove towards the target but managed to just pull the ball back into the path of Mansiz. Again, the two combined in the 32nd minute. Mansiz played the ball to Sukur at the top of the box, and the Parma striker fed it back for Mansiz to chip the ball over Lee Woon Jae.
It was a superb performance by the two strikers, who combined so well all night and produced three goals between them.
On his first goal of the tournament, Sukur said, "I had waited to score today's goal. When would I have scored, if not in the last game of this tournament. Many people were waiting for me to score a goal, but I didn't have much luck in previous matches."
