Surfing the Macinternet
Mac Links:
- Macintosh Links -
http://www.maclinks.digitalapple.com, more than 1,000 Macintosh links are neatly
categorized into groups such as magazines, product vendors, stores, resources, newsgroups,
free software libraries, and just about anything else you can think of.
- Everything Mac -
http://www.everythingmac.com, a collection of links and information about Macs and Mac
products. Like Macintosh Links.
- Ric Ford's MacInTouch -
http://www.macintouch.com. Troubleshooting and News. MacInTouch has the latest news on
bugs and fixes for the Mac OS, application software, and hardware.
- MacFixIt - http://www.macfixit.com. Tips
and troubleshooting material. MacFixIt is a good place to go for work-arounds for software
bugs, Mac OS troubleshooting tips, and help with installing everything from RAM to
printers. The site also contains a library of freeware and shareware troubleshooting
utilities and links to specific troubleshooting-related files on Apple's Web sites.
- Apple Support Tools
- http://support.info.apple.com/support/support.html. This handy site contains links
to various Apple support sites, including the searchable Tech Info Library. Here you'll
find product spec sheets, FAQs, troubleshooting tips, and documented bugs, fixes, and
work-arounds. Apple Support Tools also has links to authorized Apple sellers and
technicians and to libraries of official software updates, patches, and shareware.
- Adobe Photoshop Web Reference -
http://adscape.com/eyedesign/photoshop, an extensive online guide to the tools,
palettes, and filters of Photoshop 3 and 4. Complete with illustrative, before-and-after
screen shots, this site can teach you how to use Photoshop's features and take advantage
of shortcuts and tips. It also provides information about individual plug-ins.
Mac Propaganda:
- The EvangeList Web Site -
http://www.evangelist.macaddict.com run by Apple's Guy Kawasaki. This site contains
searchable archives of Guy's MacWay EvangeList, a mailing list that spreads news,
opinions, and pro-Mac messages from Guy and list readers called EvangeListas. Some of the
stuff is pretty hard-core, such as action items calling for EvangeListas to lobby software
companies to develop Mac versions. But there are many useful items like job openings and
discounts on products. And you can use the list to find niche software. The Web site also
has a well-organized set of technical support links. Mac
Requests - http://macrequests.pair.com is a pro-Mac site with a different twist. Mac
Requests asks visitors which programs they wish were available for the Mac and lobbies
developers with the requests they receive. Mac Requests also lists applications,
utilities, and games that have been recently ported to the Mac.

Mac-Related Jobs:
- MacTemps - http://www.mactemps.com is an
employment agency that pays union scale for Mac jobs in graphics, Web design and
production, programming, technical support, and other areas.
is devoted solely to San Francisco positions.
- MacTech -
http://www.mactech.com/jobs/indexz.html lets you post your own position-wanted ad,
search a database of available positions, or post job listings if you're looking to hire
Mac talent. MacTech's listings tend to be on the technical side, geared toward programmers
and engineers. But whether you're job hunting or hiring, the service is free.
- Apple's QuickTime VR Web site -
http://www.quicktimevr.apple.com has links to dozens of sites with interactive
QuickTime VR files. (You need the QuickTime plug-in, which comes with Navigator 3 and Mac
OS 7.6 and 8.0.) With the links here, you can take a tour of Disneyland or maneuver around
the surface of Mars. I'm partial to wandering through the tunnels of the Great Pyramid at
Nova Online Pyramids
- http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/nova/pyramid
and exploring the Roman ruins at Virtual Roma
- http://www.webcomp.com/virtuale.
Windows users can access the QuickTime VR sites, too, because there's a Windows version of
the QuickTime plug-in. It's just part of the Macification of the Web.
