- IEEE and Membership
- What's the IEEE?
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.
is the world's largest technical professional society. A non-profit
organization, IEEE promotes the development and application
of electrotechnology and allied sciences for the benefit of
humanity, the advancement of the profession and the well-being
of our members.
The IEEE is composed of more than 365,000 members who participate
in its activities in approximately 150 countries. The technical
objectives of the IEEE focus on advancing the theory and practice
of electrical, electronics and computer engineering and computer
science.
- How Do I Become A Member?
IEEE membership is open to professionals with varying levels
of academic accomplishment and work experience. Member, Senior
Member and Fellow Grades are limited to those who have achieved
professional competence and recognition. Associate grade is
open to certain technical applicants who may benefit by membership.
All members (Associate, Member, Senior Member and Fellow) pay
the same low membership dues and receive the same membership
benefits and services. Associates may not vote in IEEE elections
or hold volunteer offices. Student members have discounted dues.
To join IEEE or obtain a membership application visit
http://www.ieee.org/portal/index.jsp?pageID=corp_level1&path=membership/join&file=index.xml&xsl=generic.xsl.
You may apply on-line and pay with a credit card, or fill out
the application on-line, print then fax to IEEE, or download
a PDF file of the member and student member application and
fax the completed application to IEEE.

- Societies
- What are the IEEE Societies and
How do they work?
The technical societies of the IEEE provide publications, conferences,
colleagueship, and many other benefits within 36 specialized
areas.
A brief synopsis of each society is available
http://www.ieee.org/organizations/tab/society.html
Societies are established within the scope and objectives of
the IEEE groups of members interested in specific technical
fields or related subjects. Each Society may publish periodicals
incorporating papers of lasting value to the profession in the
field of interest of the Society and designated as the "IEEE
Transactions on____________". All Societies consist exclusively
of IEEE members and Affiliates. All IEEE members, including
those qualifying for special membership categories, may join
any and all societies upon payment of the appropriate fees.
A Society by itself, or jointly with other organizations, may
hold conferences, conventions, or offer lectures. Each Society
shall conduct it's activities with the Constitution, Bylaws,
and other rules externally imposed which by law affect the membership
and activities of the IEEE
- How do I join an IEEE Society?
An IEEE member may
join as many Societies as desired. The discounted
rates are allowed only for subscriptions used personally by
the society member. Society members also receive a society newsletter,
conference announcements, and other information relating to
available activities and products. All membership, and subscriptions
have a common expiration date of December 31, therefore, when
joining after March 1, an applicant may pay 1/2 price for all
new publications, and society memberships.
- What is a Society Affiliate?
An IEEE Society Affiliate is not an IEEE member, but rather
an individual who has been admitted by an IEEE Society with
the special rights and privileges of that particular organization
within the IEEE. In general, an Affiliate must have attained
stature in all related scientific and technical field, comparable
to IEEE's membership grade of Associate.

exposing you to the latest trends in industry and helping you
make important personal contacts with working engineers.
Student members receive the award winning IEEE SPECTRUM Magazine,
The Institute and IEEE Potentials Magazine. There is a substantial
discount on their IEEE membership, a 50% discount on all Society
memberships and a discount on optional Society publications.
Student members also receive a 5 year recent graduate discount
program after graduation designed to easily fit into the young
engineer's budget. As a Student member you have access to the
world's most comprehensive source of electrical, electronic
and computer engineering publications. Other benefits include
Networking-meeting members and Industry leaders to discuss today's
Technical and Professional issues. The Student member will gain
valuable leadership experience and developing interpersonal
skills by getting involved in local branch and section activities.
IEEE offers Student members the prestige and recognition of
