Analyzing the Sample Data

You can produce a histogram for each attribute in the sample data that you selected when you opened Dynamic Shells. This can be helpful if you want to make an assessment of the validity of your data before you run an estimation.

To produce a histogram for analysis:

  1. In Data & Analysis, on the Home tab, choose the Attribute.
  2. Click Sample Data Analysis.
  3. The histogram is displayed in the Sample data distribution window.

The analysis produces a range of statistics as well as the histogram. In the Sample data distribution window, the statistics are displayed in the top right. Values are listed for:

  • Sample count: The total number of samples in the data set.
  • Min value: The smallest value for the attribute selected.
  • Max value: The largest value for the attribute selected.
  • Mean: The average value for the attribute selected.
  • Median: The middle value for the attribute selected.
  • Std. Dev.: The standard deviation between values for the attribute selected.

You can rescale and zoom in on the histogram to get additional information when you are analyzing the data.

To change the scale of the histogram:

  1. In the Sample data distribution window, drag the edges of the grey scale bar in or out to cover the range you want to display.
  2. To see the part of the histogram that become out-of-view at a lower scale, drag the grey scale bar to the right or left.

To zoom in on the histogram:

  • In the Sample data distribution window, click at the start point of the area you want to zoom in on, and release at the end point of the area you want to zoom in on.
  • The histogram resizes to show only the section of data you have selected.
