CMP652 - Next Generation Database Management Systems (Spring 2022)

Lecturer: Dr. Fuat Akal

Lectures: Fridays, @14:00

Office Hours: By Appt. Only

Course Description

Volume and velocity of data are tremendously increasing everyday. In addition, data is coming from various sources and its fast processing has become more critical as well. Data management systems have to evolve to cope with such data. This course covers several aspects of data management technologies, which vary from standard relational database systems to manage traditional data to NOSQL systems to manage Big Data. Means to process such data is also in the context of this class.

Course Work and Grading

Lectures will be conducted in English. Course materials will be in English. Involvement in the lectures are highly encouraged but NOT mandatory. Both will be rewarded as 5% while grading though. The lecturer principally does not let a student fail, as long as the student tries enough.

There will be NO written examinations. Instead, students will work on term projects. Students may either work alone or as a group of two.

As the term project, each student (group) is supposed to present a topic (or, bunch of papers) as midterm (40%), and deliver a survey/term paper as final exam (55%).

Students may pick their topics themselves, which must be approved by the lecturer. Or else, they will be assigned topics by the lecturer.

Prerequisites

No technical prerequisite exists. However, the lecturer expects that a student has a genuine interest in the class. That is, students must be willing to learn new technologies, to investigate the literature, and possibly to build up some kind of foundation for future studies.
