Goals: A major focus
of the course is on integrated online library systems, but other library technologies
that affect services provided to users will
be discussed in some detail. We will
go through the thinking and
planning processes to design an integrated
library system, identify its major
components, and try to design
certain parts of it, although the focus
of this course will not be on programming. Upon completing the course, students will not only discuss
the requirements for an integrated library systems but also evaluate such
systems and understand basic concerns such as management, maintenance, etc. The design part
of the course will be suited to students’ needs as the semester
progresses.
The objectives of the course in relation to the first
part of the course are as follows:
As the semester progresses, we will be concentrating
on design issues further. Students will be familiar with the
operating systems on which integrated library systems can be installed; learn how to put together
such a system on Linux or Windows environments and make it available
through the web.
Assignments: The course will
have both focused reading assignments and hands on practices with Linux,
Windows, Web environments (XML) and some programming.
Readings: There are two sets of readings included in the
course outline: theoretical and practical.
They will be listed in the syllabus and/or the course blog (ytonta.blogspot.com). Please use the blog to discuss readings and communicate
with class members (including us).
Grades: Grades for this course
will be based on completion of the assignments, midterm, and participation in
class discussions.
Attendance:
You shall attend all the lectures.
You shall come to the class on time. Once
the lecture starts, students will not be allowed to get in to the classroom
until we break. If you are unable to participate two consecutive lectures or a total of
three lectures within the semester, you must produce a formal document
explaining the cause(s) of your absence.
Texts: The required textbooks for the course is:
Cohn, John, et al.
(2001). Planning for Integrated Systems and Technologies: A
How-To-Do-It Manual for Librarians. Neal Schuman.
Cooper, M. D. (1995). Design of library automation systems: File
structures, data structures and tools.
New York: Wiley.
Glushko, R.J. & McGrath, T. (2005).
Document Engineering: Analyzing and Designing Documents for Business
Informatics and Web Services. Cambridge,
MA: MIT Press. (Will probably use this occasionally.)
More will be assigned as and when
needed.
