Introduction to the Internet: FTP

FTP:

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. With FTP, you can transfer files between your computer and another, in either direction. (It is also a software on your host computer that permits you to get files over the net.) FTP is a very common method of moving files between two Internet sites. FTP is a special way to login to another Internet site for the purposes of retrieving and/or sending files. There are many Internet sites that have established publicly accessible repositories of material that can be obtained using FTP, by logging in using the account name anonymous, thus these sites are called anonymous ftp servers.

In order to transfer files from one computer to another one can use:

- FTP client program (Ws_ftp, Fetch etc.)
- Web Browsers (Netscape, Internet Explorer etc.)
