Introduction to the Internet: Gopher

Gopher:

Gopher is a hierarchical menu structure laid over the various computers, directories and files on the Internet. Gophers are electronic guides which make it easy to navigate through huge masses of information, either on a local computer or across the Internet. Software on your host computer lets you look in the thousands of "gopher servers" that exist worldwide, containing menus of information files and binhexed files that you might conceivably transfer back to your host computer for downloading. You use the return and arrow keys or type the menu item numbers to move around on the menu.

In order to access to a gopher menu one can use either a:

- Gopher client program (Turbo Gopher, QvtNet etc. ) or a
- Web Browser (Netscape, Internet Explorer etc.)
