You can also benefit from any other textbook, article, note or lecture note, in English or Turkish, which covers the course material.

Objectives:
This is the first course of the two-step ”Mathematics for Business” series, primarily designed for constructing a mathematics background for business students, covering related topics to deriving necessary information from mathematical functions, using statistical data and solving mathematical business models.

Prerequisites:
None.

Grading Policy:

  • Your final grade will be a result of a midterm exam, (30%), homeworks (20%) and a final exam (50%).
  • Please bring your calculators and necessary stationary equipment with you for all of the exams. Sharing calculators or any stationary equipment will not be allowed.
  • Attendance will not be used for grading purposes, except for the related university regulations.

Class Policy:

  • Students are obliged to maintain the learning environment.
  • When asked, students are expected to participate in in-class activities.
  • Lack of knowledge of the rules is not a reasonable explanation for a violation. Any violation of the rules or causing a disturbance in the classroom will be observed and necessary actions will be taken.

Tentative Course Outline:

Week -1-

Meeting and introduction to the course. Linear equations, functions and graphs (Chapter 1,2).

Week -2-

Limits (Chapter 10, Section 10.1-10.3).

Week -3-

Derivation and differentiation (Chapter 10, Sections 10.4, 10.5, 10.6).

Week -4-

Using derivatives and differentials in practice (Chapter 10, Section 10.7).

Week -5-

Derivative: More complex derivations (Chapter 11, Sections 11.2, 11.3, 11.5, 11.6, 11.7).

Week -6-

Derivative: The Chain Rule (Chapter 11, Section 11.4).

Week -7-

Derivation: Partial Derivative (Chapter 15; Section 15.2).

Week -8-

MIDTERM WEEK - Course will not take place.

Week -9-

Graphing: Drawing and using graphs of functions by using derivatives (Chapter 12, Sections 12.1, 12.2, 12.4).

Week -10-

Graphing: Using graphing theory for optimization (Chapter 12, Sections 12.5, 12.6).

Week -11-

Integration: Introduction (Chapter 13, Sections 13.1, 13.2, 13.3; Chapter 14, Sections 14.3, 14.4).

Week -12-

Integration: Advanced integration topics (Chapter 13, Sections 13.4, Chapter 14, Sections 14.1, 14.2).

Week -13-

Integration: Business implications.

Week -14-

Review.
